The greenfield 1.4 million tpy Lanjigarh alumina refinery in the eastern Indian state of Orissa is due to produce its first alumina by the end of this quarter, according to owner UK-listed Indian metals group Vedanta.
The company reported that commissioning activities had started in the first quarter of this year with the charging of sourced bauxite occurring in the last week of March. One unit of the captive power plant was commissioned in February and is now under stabilization procedures.
Lanjigarh will mark a step-change in Vedanta's alumina production profile. It current operates two small refineries in India—combined production was 299,000t in the financial year ending March 2007, up 1% from 296,000t in the previous financial year.
