Construction on the 125,000tpy Alutrint aluminum smelter in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will start ‘”very shortly”, said Patrick Manning, prime minister of the country. “Actually, equipment is shipping from China to start the smelter in La Brea.” Alutrint, which is to be built by a Chinese group, is a joint venture between the government and Venezuela’s Grupo Sural. Alcoa is also seeking a 341,000tpy aluminum smelter in Trinidad but seemed to be collapsed due to an unsettled problem of suitable location. In October last year Alcoa’s chief executive Alain Belda said that until “they resolve what is an internal issue for them, we are doing absolutely nothing at the moment,” .
