Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart) is preparing to build another alumina refinery on the island according to Jamaican Finance Minister Audley Shaw.

In remarks made at a town hall in St. Ann, Shaw revealed that the firm is planning to construct its second plant, which is expected to turn out two thousand metric tons of alumina per annum. The plant will boost Alpart’s overall alumina capacity to 3,600 metric tons per year.

Shaw went on to say that seven hundred Jamaicans have already gone to work on the project, and that, once fully operational, thousands more positions will need to be filled to operate the plant.

In addition to the alumina refinery, Shaw said that Alpart also intends to build an aluminium foil plant.

Prior to its shut down in 2009, Alpart’s total capacity was 1.65 million metric tons of alumina and 4.9 million metric tons of bauxite (sourced from its own mines). Rusal acquired a 65% share in the operation in 2007 when it acquired Glencore’s alumina business, and came into possession of the remainder in 2011. Jiuquan Iron & Steel (Group) Co. Ltd. (JISCO) purchased Alpart for US$299 million late last year.

JISCO was founded in 1958 in Jiayuguan, Gansu, China. The firm has operations in China, South Africa, the Philippines, and Mongolia, and produces approximately 8 million short tons of crude and rolled steel per annum. JISCO rose to its spot in the top ten producers of aluminium in China upon purchasing Alpart. It has been in the top 500 Chinese producers for several years.
