United Co. Rusal's bauxite mine in Guinea has been shut for two days by protesters who are demonstrating over a lack of power supplies for the local community, a leader of the demonstrators said. The protesters are blocking rail lines to the mine, Moussa Bangoura, a leader of the demonstration, said in an interview late yesterday in the capital, Conakry. Rusal said in a statement that it's working with the government to resolve the situation. ``The situation in Guinea does not affect the company's overall performance targets,'' the company said in an e-mailed statement. Guinea has 30 percent of the world's bauxite, an ore used to make aluminum. Almost 50 percent of Guinea's 10.2 million people live in poverty, according to data compiled by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Source: www.chinamining.org
