Century Aluminum takes $73 mln 2nd quarter charge

* Says taking $73.2 million Q2 impairment charge * Charge for transferring ownership interests NEW YORK, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Century Aluminum Co, which already reported a second-quarter loss, said on Friday it is taking a $73.2 million charge that will increase that loss. The non-cash charge for equity investment impairment will be reflected in second-quarter financial statements on Form 10-Q expected to be filed with the Securities and Exchange on Aug. 10. Last month, the Monterey, California-based company reported a second-quarter net loss of $33.9 million, or 46 cents per share. A spokesman noted on Friday that those results were only "provisional" and that the impairment charge, although incurred in the third quarter, would be included in the second-quarter results filed with the SEC next week. The charge relates to the recently agreed transfer of the company's 50 percent ownership interests in Gramercy Alumina LLC in Louisiana and Jamaica's St. Ann Bauxite Ltd. Century Aluminum said on Tuesday it will transfer its stakes in the two companies to subsidiaries of privately-held Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. Century Aluminum stock was up 16 cents, or 1.47 percent, at $11.01 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. (Reporting by Steve James; editing by Andre Grenon)
