Alcoa named Keith Walton vice president, government affairs, starting Jan. 4. He will succeed the retiring Russell Wisor, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Wisor has been with the aluminum maker for 33 years and is retiring effective Feb. 1.

In his new position, Walton will be based at the company’s Washington, D.C., office and will lead federal and state government affairs activities.

Previously, Walton was of counsel to Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough. He has also worked at the U.S. Department of Treasury as deputy chief of staff and chief of staff to the under secretary for enforcement.

“Keith brings to Alcoa a wealth of experience,” said Daniel Cruise, vice president, global government and public affairs, in a written statement. “We know he will represent Alcoa effectively as we continue to grow the role Alcoa aluminum plays in strengthening the U.S. economy and enhancing the sustainability of everything from beverage containers to automobiles. We expect him to have a long and successful career.”

In 2010, Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) spent $1.9 million on its federal lobbying effort, according the Center for Responsive Politics. That is up slightly from $1.6 million spent in 2009.
