Russian aluminum giant Rusal said Thursday it is considering the construction of a number of terminals to handle alumina imports for expanding aluminum production in Russia.
It is in talks with a number of port authorities including St. Petersburg and Novorossiisk on the Black Sea, a company spokeswoman said.
Rusal currently produces 10.6 million mt of alumina annually. Of that amount, 3.6 million mt is produced at home, with the remainder imported, Rusal said.
Rusal's alumina demands are set to grow in the coming years as new capacity comes onstream.
Last year, Rusal started construction of a 750,000 mt/year greenfield aluminum smelter in Taishet near Irkutsk. It is to reach full capacity by 2011, Rusal said Thursday.
Its Boguchanskoye smelter, which is being built alongside a hydroelectric power plant, will also reach full capacity by 2011. Its capacity is 600,000mt.
Rusal, majority-owned by Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, accounts for almost 12.5% of global output of primary aluminium and 16% of the world's alumina production, according to its website.
